schools for decades, remembers the Winfrey’s progressive family party on Christmas Eve, a gathering of five generations. And while her memories are clear and fresh, she still keeps a copy of the letter she wrote to a sister-in-law whose family couldn’t join the festivities, describing the evening:

The night began at grandfather’s house with a reading of the story of Christmas from Luke. "And it came to pass. . Greatgrandfather looked adoringly at his assembled clan, the light from at least 50 candles casting their flickering shadows on the walls. Grandfather offered grace, adding “for these good things in life” to his usual “kindnesses” in the benediction. Silver trays of ice cold tomato juice and crackers spread with cheese were passed around before the company departed for the next home.

“How warm and snug! Such a pile of presents under the tree. . . Five card tables ashine with a star-centered candle and starched linens. . . Turkey, dressing, gravy, cranberry pickle, escaloped oysters, colorful green pears and candied yams. Find your place cards.” Just as everyone is taking a last bite, the hostess-to-be slips away to prepare the next round.
