Irvin W. Schmidt, 76, of Arlington and a weekend resident of Castleton, died Sunday, December 11, 1983, at Fairfax Hospital.
Born on December 19, 1906, he was a son of the late Otto and Anna Wilhelm Schmidt of Madison, Wisconsin.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, he worked in Washington, D.C., as a labor economist for the United States Department of Labor. At his retirement on March 1, 1976, he had almost 43 years of Federal Service.
His first wife, the former, Eva Marie Pelland of Centerdale, Rhode Island died on May 8, 1948.
On November 12, 1949, he married Elizabeth Browning Payne of Rixeyville, a graduate of William and Mary College. She worked in the Audit Division of the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C. for 13 years before her marriage.
In addition to his wife, other survivors include two sons, William Payne Schmidt of Arlington and Michael Browning Schmidt of Batesville, Ark. and one daughter, Elizabeth Anne Stilling of Baltimore, Md.
Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs.'Helen Loftus of Greenville, Michigan, Mrs. Genevieve Winter of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and Mrs. Dorothy Hartman of Oak Park, Illinois.
Funeral services were conducted on December 14, 1983, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Arlington. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper.
