pans. The nuts came in 100 pound burlap sacks. At least that’s how big they seemed to me! And there were bags of raisins and candied fruits.
“They’d spend days and days cutting and chopping. And I remember we kids sitting by the stove, greasing brown paper for the baking pans. Everything smelled soooo good,” Nancy recalled. “The batter was sweet and sticky, just delicious. We’d get to clean out the wash pans when they were finished. Talk about lick n’ a bowl! That was neat!
“I tried to keep up the tradition with my own children when they were small,” Nancy continued. “But I ate so much of the dough—it was the first time since I was a kid that I could have all I wanted—that I got sick. I didn’t bake fruit cakes again for years and years.”
