Rappahannock then went on the road Friday against "AA” Madison for what some thought would be a blow-out. Instead the Panthers took it all the way to the wire, missing a shot at the buzzer in the final seconds that would have taken them into overtime for the second time this year.
It was a game of fire and ice for Rappahannock. Up against 6’7” center Caroll Lee Ward, bv far the tallest opposition they have faced this year and probably the biggest big man they’ll see all season, the panthers were undaunted. They even outrebounded Ward and the Mountaineers, ;>(5-25. But the RCHS players slipped on the ice of foul trouble and cold streaks, their dual problems in the five losses to date.
The Panthers started the game looking definitely outclassed by the bigger “AA” squad, falling behind 9-0. Then Pendleton warmed things up. Despite double coverage, he connected on a jumper from outside and then converted it to a threepoint play, leading Rapp on a binge of six more unanswered points.
But with the score tied at 11 all at the start of the second period, the Panthers again turned cold and fell nine points back again on turn-overs and fouls bv the half.
