Get out pencil and paper to make that list of New Year’s Resolutions. If you smoke, promise to quit. If Christmas dinner and nibbles here and there of holiday cookies, cakes and fudge have left a little extra around the middle, promise to loose five pounds. Decide on Friday what you want to resolve to do—or not to do—and you’ll still have two days to binge before called upon to exercise will power.
Encourage youngsters to adopt the custom followed in Belgium where children save their pennies to buy elaborately decorated papers on which they write New Year’s wishes AND promise to improve their behavior. They polish and edit their compositions in school until they can make a final copy without error or erasure. Then the messages are carefully hidden away until New Year’s morning when the child reads aloud his or her composition before the assembled family. That way, you’ll have those teenage promises in writing, a record you can pull out as a reminder when good intentions start to fade.
