David Lee Smoot told the guard he was sick and was allowed to rest behind some bushes.

The next time Smoot turned up was some 30 hours later at a house in Huntly, having been tracked by 36 correctional officers, four state troopers, the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Department and a Virginia Game Commission officer.

Smoot, 21, was one of about a dozen prisoners on a White Post Correctional Facility work detail picking up trash and cutting bushes along Route 522 in Warren County past Chester Gap on Aug. 21 when he told the guard that he was sick.

The guard allowed him to rest behind some bushes, and he started running towards the Appalachian Trail.

From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. the following day, Smoot was the object of a search throughout Rappahannock County involving the four agencies.
