The voices of campers floated out over the lake. It was the final night. The final campfire. And the special love that had been building all week, like a great symphony racing towards the last movement, had reached a crescendo. “I claim an honor...”
Campers, teen leaders and counselors stood to recognize and salute those who had made the seven days at camp so special. The speakers paused again and again, swallowing great gulps of air, their cheeks streaked by tears.
“I claim an honor for Katie for being so cheerful and for learning to walk.”
“I claim an honor for Eugene for being so brave.”
“I claim an honor for Dooley for being such a great director and being such a good friend. ”
“I claim an honor foi all ‘.he campers. They’ve made me feel so good. They’re like a second family.”
This was no ordinary last campfire. This was no ordinary camp.
