It should go without saying that the roads in our county have begun carrying our most precious seasonal cargo: our children.
Schools opened this week and once again we feel the need to remind drivers to be careful. Unfortunately, many such warnings go unheeded.
Last year in Virginia, some 700 crashes involving school buses occurred, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
One child was killed and four others injured last year in the area just beyond the school bus door. That is five children too many, we believe.
Youngsters know little about the rules of the road. They understand less.
The driver must be aware and be readied for any unexplanable action by children leaving the school bus area.
