speculation attached to all this, and Chichester himself will almost certainly have something to say about it. But as the odds stand now there appears to be an excellent chance that many of his old friends who stood at his side when he wrested the nomination from former Attorney General Marshall Coleman and others eariler in the summer will not be at his side when he stands for the gubernatorial nod in 1989.
Indeed, where will those old friends, such as former Gov. Mills Godwin, former Sen. Harry Byrd, financier Smith F erebee and a host of others be standing? Sources within the GOP are convinced they will be solidly behind 1st District Congressman Herbert Bateman of Newport News for the governorship.
According to these sources, the Stafford senator is quietly regarded as a “stalking horse” for Bateman. Chichester’s role may be to hold the conservative wing of the party together until Bateman is able to begin to make his gubernatorial moves after the 1988 House, U.S. Senate and presidential elections.
