Fauquier Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge Burke Hertz ruled Thursday that Leon Smith and Darrin King, both of Morgantown, a small community a mile west of Marshall, must remain at the Rappahannock Regional Detention Center until the Sept. 17 hearing.
The boys are charged with murder, rape and abduction in the Aug. 5 death of Melissa Lee Bushrod. They also allegedly choked and stomped on her.
Each of the three charges carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. If convicted of first-degree murder during the commission of a rape, the boys could be sentenced to death.

One of the wont dwelling fires in Clarke County in recent years heavily damaged a house near Wickliffe Saturday night.
Some 60 to 70 firemen from three companies fought the blaze in the large stucco dwelling for more than four hours, said Wayne Whetzel, chief of Enders Volunteer Fire Company in Berryville. Even though firemen saved a portion of the house, Whetzel estimated damages at more than $40,000.
The house, off Route 608 near the West Virginia line in northeastern Clarke County, was unoccupied at the time of the blaze. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wyatt, reportedly are vacationing in Europe, said Whetzel.
Firemen were unable to determine how the fire started. The case has been turned over to arson investigators with the Virginia State Police.
Although Whetzel said there was no evidence to suspect arson, a fire in an unoccupied dwelling would “tend” to be either deliberately set or the result of an electrical malfunction, he said.
Firemen were called to the house shortly after 11 p.m. when the farm manager noticed the flames.
