During the third week in August, the Northern Virginia 4-H Center in the Blue Ridge foothills outside Front Royal becomes Camp Fantastic.
The camp is the inspiration of 4H Center director John Dooley and Tom and Sheila Baker, who lost their 13-year-old daughter to cancer. It is sponsored by 4-H, the National Institute of Health and by Special Love, an organization founded by Doo'cj and the Bakers.
The camp’s purpose is to give youngsters stricken with cancer a chance to be normal — to canoe, ride a, horses, swim, dance, stay up all night giggling and sharing secrets, short-sheet a bunk, decorate a bathroom with shaving cream, make new Mends — and forget about cancer for one week.
It’s a special week for the campers, maybe the best week of their lives. That’s what they tell each other and the counselors, over and ' over and over again.
