An estimated 2,500 persons participated in the first truck and tractor pull in Rappahannock County Saturday, a benefit for the Amissville Fire Department.
Some 1,500 people paid their way into the carnival grounds — children were admitted free — and another 1,000 or so people were on hand, either as pullers or family or friends of the Old Dominion Tractor Pull, the sponsoring company.
“I think it was a real good turnout for the first time,” said fire department treasurer Diane Morris. She estimated that the fire department could stand to make about $3,000, having grossed some $11,000.
Locally, some winners included: (in the 9,000 farm tractor) Curtis Elliott, Ray Ellis and Carl James; (12,000 farm tractor) Todd Tanner, Alan Elliott, Curtis Elliott and Ray Ellis; (street trucks) Sterling Boyers, Russell Conley and Danny Hanks. e
Travis Meadows was a winner in the three-wheeler competition.
Officials were Lee Hitt and Gary Rankin.
In addition, Chris Bawkey and Randy Smith were credited with organizing the event.
Pullers came from throughout Virginia, Maryland and Delaware, and as far away as North Carolina.
The concession stands were operated by the ladies’ auxiliary.
