Slaughter Jr. (R-Culpeper) should retire along about 1990, a seat could be fashioned for Chichester in the decennial redistricting which he could occupy for years to come.
One sort of awakens with a start from these musings. There is enough substance to make them real enough and yet enough fancy to suggest that one put off worrying about them for two or three more years.
One thing is fairly certain, however. The independent conservative “Old Guard” wants one more win. They have never forgiven the Republicans because of the defeat of Bateman for the lieutenant governor’s nomination in 1980 when state Sen. Nathan Miller won the nod. The delegates pledged to bornagain former Del. Guy 0. Farley bolted to Miller after Farley pulled out of the race. The Bateman supporters would see his nomination and election in 1989 as final vindication for that rebuff.
But, as we say, the dog days are here and, in these times of the summer doldrums, we can dream up just about anything.
Including, to be sure, Doug Wilder being sworn in as lieutenant governor come next January.
