Clarke fair draws 66,000
A cold rain dampened the final night of the Clarke County Fair and foiled predictions of a record attendance, but some 66,000 still flocked to what the county Tourism Com. mittee chairman calls “the largest agricultural fair in northern Virginia.”
Perfect weather helped draw a record 70,000 people to the 1984 versio of the fair.
1985 Fair Chairman Bobby Leake said Friday’s crowd of 15,400 paying customers was the top night and Saturday had been expected to be the biggest draw. But as the rains came down, the Ruritan members closed the gate about 7 p.m. Many people still entered the fair after then but no count was kept, said Leake.
"We got everything in except the last band,” Leake noted of the Saturday schedule. Even the fireworks went off.
An exploding transformer behind the grandstand caused minor fireworks of its own on Friday, but no lights were lost and there was no panic.
