“Just when you knew you couldn’t hold back the tears another minute, somebody would crack a joke and you’d laugh until it hurt,” said Jim.
“I remember somebody asking Ross what time it was. He held out his arm, the one that had been amputated, and with this shocked, surprised look on his face, yelled, ‘Oh, my God, what happened to it? It was right here a minute ago.’ Yes, they were upset about having cancer, and they cried sometimes, but they went on. They didn’t give up. They never gave up.”
“It’s a very emotional time,” added Tommy, remembering the evening rap sessions in his room. “There’s no question about it, you do cry.” Were they embarrassed by the tears?
“No,” Tommy answered emphatically. “I can’t remember when I cried befoi this. It was the first time I’d cned since I was a kid. But I wasn’t embarrassed.”
