Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ Placido Domingo and Julia Migenes-Johnson star in Francesco Rosi’s stunning and vivacious adaptation of the world’s most performed opera, “Carmen.” The 152-minute film will be shown Aug. 31, Sept. 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gay St. Theatre. Migene-Johnson’s “Carmen” revitalizes the story and gives it a new sexual and romantic intensity. Rosi lets the music carry the passion, and his direction supplies the ideal conditions for the viewer to experience the opera. If you don’t know or like opera, come give this a try for an exciting story and one of the greatest voices in all opera. The film is on the Washington Post’s 10 best list, is French with subtitles and is rated PG.
Business Council meeting "Hie Sperryville Business Council will meet on Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. at Carriage House Antiques in Sperryville. All Sperryville business people are urged to attend. Beahm reunion The second annual reunion for the descendants of George Washington and Nancy Bolen Beahm is scheduled for Sept. 1 at the Rappahannock Park on Route 211 near Washington. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the reunion that will begin at 9 a.m. and are asked to bring a covered dish. A program is scheduled for noon. Literacy program The Child Care and Learning Center and the Rappahannock County Library will co-sponsor a presentation by the Literacy Volunteers of America at the Gay St. Theatre on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. There will be a short visual program on the volunteer tutorial system used by LVA and Steve Deupree, the chairman of Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville, will be present to answer questions about starting a Literacy Volunteer program in Rappahannock.
