Robins seeks bankruptcy
RICHMOND — Friends and enemies of the A.H. Robins Co. viewed the firm’s decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as the latest episode in a bad dream, but for widely different reasons.
To the leaders of the city, where A.H. Robins Co. has been headquartered for 119 years, the flood of litigation from women who claimed iqjury from the Daikon Shield intrauterine device was simply bad luck for a company that had prided itself on an image of corporate responsibility.
To plaintiffs, Robins’ failure to move quickly to recall the IUD, its subsequent efforts to deny responsibility for damage the device allegedly caused, and filing for protection under bankruptcy, were the height of irresponsibility.
Robins has donated millions to the arts, entertainment and social services in Richmond. Robins’ executives are on most of the important city boards, and its employee programs are considered progressive for a conservative southern city.
The family business opened in 1866. It expanded rapidly in the 1950’s and 1960’s with products like Robitussin and Chap Stick, and in 1963 the firm went public. The firm now employs 6,000 worldwide, including 1,500 in Richmond.
Its annual sales approach $650 million, and operating profits of $128.1 million were reported last year.
On Wednesday, Robins filed for protection .under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy statutes.
