Rate hike necessary
Loudoun telephone customers could soon see a 54-cent increase in their monthly bills to cover the cost of an advanced 911 emergency telephone system.
The board of supervisors voted last Wednesday to advertise the increase for public hearing on Sept. 10. The board could then take action on Sept. 16, and the increase could take effect on November bills,atataff i report said.
The board voted in June to establish a user fee to pay for the new 911 system, which county fire and rescue officials have advocated as being better than the current system.
Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company, which serves almost all Loudoun telephone customers, has estimated it will cost about $131,000 to install the complex new system, which will use computers to help dispatchers pinpoint the location of emergencies so workers can provide assistance more quickly. In addition, the monthly maintenance cost will be about $6,300.
