The search continued through Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, Sheriff John Henry Woodward said the officers would have to wait for someone to call with information on Smoot. That call was placed early Thursday afternoon.
The caller told the Sheriff’s Department dispatcher that Smoot was at a house in Huntly, approximately four miles from where he ran from the work site. Sheriff Woodward and the other officers arrived at the house at 1 p.m.
“Several troopers and I went up to the house, but men were all around,” Sheriff Woodward said. “His capture was a joint effort.”
He said that Smoot’s capture went smoothly.
“When I walked up, he said, ‘I’m glad you’re here’,” Sheriff Woodward said. “He said he was going to give himself up, anyway.”
