For someone who will be 70 in November, quit smoking and drinking — “behaved myself,” he calls it — some 40 years ago when doctors found three spots on his left lung which indirectly led to his going broke, was married, divorced and married again within three years’ time, fought the Japanese in a world war and, as he says, “don’t quite get around as good as I used to,” John Gaines has plenty to feel good about.
He’s working at his own pace, with his own hands, on projects he does because he wants to, even if he can’t find the time to build a catfish pond on land across the street or can’t quite get around to putting up another wood shed.
