Middleburg to
host wine festival
Wine grape-growing in Virginia has increased to 1,421 acres in only 10 years and production of premium table wines has also jumped dramatically.
Translated into 625 vines per acre, about 900,000 vines have been planted, giving a sharp boost in grafted plant sales to the Omega Nursery, Culpeper, and to Schloss Tucker, Waterford.
The combination of investment outlays by 30 newly licensed farm wineries, the planting of approximately 150 small commercial-size
vineyards, plus the booming nursery business, represent an unprecedented vinicultural growth of this new industry.
The 10th Annual Wine Festival in Middleburg on Aug. 31, the 14th Winegrowing Seminar and first Virginia Wine Auction will celebrate
the agricultural achievement together with its own “Crystal” anniversary. A waiter’s race has also been added to this year’s festival.
The featured speaker at the seminars this year will be Belgianborn and French-enology educated Jaques A. Recht, winemaker at Ingleside Plantation, Oak Grove. Ingleside wines have been one of the leaders in eastern wine competitions. Mr. Recht will receive the Jefferson
Wine Trophy at the seminar for this year’s first place Chardonnay (1984).
