to help ‘kids’ Giveaways, drawings, food and drink highlight a two-day fundraiser to help “Jerry’s Kids” and the Muscular Dystrophy Association to be held at Reed Motor Co. in Culpeper. On Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. hot dogs, popcorn and soft drinks will be on sale for 25 cents each. In addition, for every car sold Reed Motor Co. will donate $100 to the MDA. Proceeds are to benefit the MDA. Kids will receive free balloons. Drawings will be held to give away a 1973 Dodge Dart, a Terry Hollandautographed basketball and a George Welsh football. Live music, provided by Tommi Reynolds and the Blue Denim, is set for Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reed Motor Co. is located on U.S. 29 at Culpeper. According to the U.S. League of Savings Institutions, 40% of last year’s home buyers were first time buyers. That percentage is up from 13.5 percent just three years ago. Last year’s first time buyers had an average household income of $34,000 and a median age of 29.3 years. About 35 percent were unmarried. About 9% bought condominiums, 16% bought new homes and the rest bought existing homes. More people were able to buy first homes last year because of the drop in sky-high interest and inflation rates. The average home buyer spent $709 per month last year for mortgage payments, property taxes, utility and insurance payments. Three years ago, the monthly average was $100 higher. Buyers and sellers of homes are positive about achieving their objectives this year. They know that if they wait, they risk paying higher prices and interest rates in the future.
