The following year, however, a drought caused a poor harvest and there was little reason to repeat the festivities. It was not until 1623 that another feast was ordained, and it was held in July to give thanks for the safe passage of a ship with supplies and new settlers.
Records of succeeding celebrations are scant. But in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day.
