“Everyone seems to be very open and very willing to discuss differences." Mrs. Tole said, assessing the progress from the committee's two meetings to date. “But there have been no raised voices and we’ve had no difficulty in gaining a consensus."
With its mandate that family life curriculum be instituted in grades kindergarten through 12 by next year, the State Department of Education provided standards of learning for each grade level.
The suggested curriculum may be adopted as is by local school divisions. amended and adopted in part or thrown out completely; the state requires only that its standards be considered by the local citizens’ groups charged with recommending a program to their school boards.
And while the state does specify that certain topics must be covered, the timing is flexible so as to allow for reflection of community values.
“We're going through each of the state's objectives with a fine tooth comb to decide if we want to use it or amend it." Mrs. Tole said. So far, changes have been minor, with “a few words added here and a few words deleted there.”
The committee's goal is to “nurture and equip our children with the know ledge and skills to make appropriate life decisions," said the chairman. To achieve this goal, the committee is addressing the following content areas:
