Dr. Einarson explained that the Surgeon General’s recent report was based on extrapolated data. It took studies of uranium miners — a group which had a known exposure to radioactive gas — and used it to estimate the risk of radon exposure in a home at a given level of concentration of the gas.

Using those figures, which provided estimates of increased risk of lung cancer at different exposure levels, the EPA arrived at the 4 pCi/1 figure of a maximum safe limit of radon gas in the home.
