November is designated National Hospice Month to honor hospice programs and workers throughout the nation. There are approximately 2,000 hospices in the U. S., with 45 in Virginia. Nationwide, there are 30,000 patients being served.

The Hospice movement began in the 1950’s in London, England with the opening of St. Christopher’s Hospice by I)r. Cicely Saunders. Dr. Saunders saw a need for supporting and counselling terminally ill patients and their families before the death. The focus is on living fully until death.

Senator Edward M. Kennedy says, “The hospice concept has moved me deeply. Hospice is a reality and a bright light in our health care system. Hospice provides a type of care that must become a model not just for the dying, butjbf ^the whole health delivery system.
