Mrs. Carney’s husband Jeb improvised a “machine” (actually a trash can mounted on an old tricycle frame) to line the fields with latex paint rather than the traditiohal lime. “It's worked so well that now the high school and the rec leagues in Culpeper and Orange want to use that method," she reported.
Cherry Street Lumber in Culpeper donated half the cost of the lumber necessary to build two sets of goals, and Rob Parrish picked up the rest of the tab.
Armed with the donated lumber, cabinetmaker Ozzie Pace went to work and constructed the goals, which are mitered and pegged so that they can be easily dismantled for storage during the off-sea.-on.
Mrs. Carney also had high praise for Sandra Brown, who volunteered to serve as the league’s treasurer. "She has really helped a lot. and has done a tremendous amount of work. Not only has she kept track of the money, she also coaches one of the teams. 1 couldn’t have done it without her."
And obviously, the league wouldn’t have gotten off the ground without the efforts of its 11 coaches: Rob Parrish. Dennis Fairbrother, April Heddleston, Susan Carney. Ken Shankle, Sharon Pierce. Doug Baumgardner, Lucky McCoy. Howard Coon, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Camev. Scott Currie, who is a former soccer coach at RCHS. has also been “a tremendous help,” Mrs. Carney said. “He’s out there .every Wednesday evening, helping with the little kids team. He’s just been great."
