The George Washington National Forest is open to hunting during seasons established by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. Hunters are required to check appropriate state regulations. A Forest Hunting Stamp is necessary to hunt in the Forest.
The regulations that prescribe legal species, weapons, season dates and bag limits are issued by states on a county-by-county basis. This applies to all types of hunting.
Almost all areas of the George Washington National Forest are open to hunting. However, hunting or discharge of weapons is not allowed in developed recreation areas, in administrative sites and down or across designated trails, roads open to bodies of water or in designated hunter camps, or outside of hunting seasons.
The rules, regulations and privileges concerning use of the National Forests do not apply to adjacent private lands. Hunters must obtain permission from private landowners before entering and using their property.
All roads normally open for public travel are available for use in the George Washington National Forest. Motorized vehicles are not permitted cross country; on closed roads or trails unless specifically designated as open by signs.
Under state law, every hunter or person accompanying a hunter during the firearms deer season shall wear blaze orange.
