Homes which register concentrations above the EPA’s recommended exposure levels with the second test should be evaluated by a contractor for modifications which will reduce the infiltration of radon gas. The list at the county health department also includes the names of contractors in this area who have indicated a willingness to install radon control systems. According to sanitarian Charles Shephard, that list will be updated periodically as more contractors submit their names for inclusion.
Contractors on that list have attended a seminar sponsored by the EPA on radon reduction methods.
Consumers should be aware, however, that neither the health department nor the EPA has any licensing or certification procedures or standards for radon gas control methods or systems. Therefore, as with any contractor, homeowners should ask for detailed information, cost and time estimates and references before considering any contractor.
