sponsor teams, including Faith Mountain Company, Brothers Signal. Dunagan Electric and Howard Coon. Their donations, Mrs. Carney said, have enabled the league to purchase uniforms and other equipment.
Though the league is still in its infancy, Mrs. Carney is already looking ahead. “My dream." she said, “is that these kids can go on to play soccer at Rappahannock County High School. . .that in five years they can go to the regional competitions, to play teams from Florida or Canada, ami people will saw 'Where did these kids come from?'"
From the league, she continued, “a great feeder program can be developed. and the beneficiaries will be Coach Dietz at RCHS and Coach T’li Maeyer at Wakefield. The key is for the kids to develop the basic skills early. If you start a kid later, you can teach him to play soccer but he will never have that ball sense that you can teach when you start them early.”
And in the future, what dees Mrs. Carney see?
As the youngsters now in this elementary-age program grow , she’d like to see a junior varsity team at the high school. Right now, she explained. eighth-graders can practice with the varsity team but they are not allowed to play. “I would like to do something so that they don’t sit on the bench and waste their skills."
But for this year, the new league’s commissioner admits she has her hands full. The fall season will run through the first week of December, with the teams playing each other as well as teams from Culpeper. Madison and Orange.
And what happens during the winter? Why, planning begins for the spring season, of course. “To be competitive with the other countyleagues. we have to play a spring season." And she adds, obviously looking forward to the prospect, “I'll bet we have 200 kids out there next spring:"
