When the last colored leaves of fall hit the ground, a group of hardy folks head for the woods. This group has been waiting anxiously all year for this season.
The George Washington National Forest is a hunters’ paradise. Nowhere else in the mid-Atlantic region is there a million acres of public land open to hunting and teeming with wildlife of all kinds, a spokesman for the forest administration said. Many game species find favorable habitat in the George Washington National Forest, where timber stands range in age from new growth in recently harvested areas to 100-plus years.
“Wildlife management is an important part of multiple-use management of the National Forests,” said Bob Glasgow*, wildlife biologist for the George Washington National Forest. “The breaks or edges created where different timber stands meet are preferred by many species. The observant hunter learns to recognize timber stand characteristics and the types of game animals to be found in them,” he said.
“White-tailed deer, the most sought-after game, are in good numbers this year”, said Mr, Glasgow-. “Deer are an opportunistic species and do best where there is a mix of timber stands of various ages. Hunters most frequently encounter young bucks and doe. Trophy bucks are harder to come by, since antler development is related to age. The more crafty bucks live longer and develop larger racks,” Mr. Glasgow said.
He also predicted that black bear hunting will probably be excellent this year, as bear populations have been steadily increasing in the Forest. Bear are found in the more remote areas of the Forest.
