iavunur iiuuuay ballet, “The Nutcracker,” to be performed at the Fauquier High School Auditorium Dec. 3 and 4 by Ballet South, will be directed by Dame Sonia Arova, the internationally-acclaimed teacher and dancer.
Ballet South is a touring group that Mikhail Baryshnikov has hailed as “talented, energetic. . .with determination,” and The New York Times has described as being led by “exceptional teachers who are shaping the budding talents of our major troupes."
International ballet star Dame Sonia Arova, director of “The Nutcracker,” began her dance training with The Opera Ballet National Theatre in her native Sofia, Bulgaria.
In 1939 at the age of 11, she won the World Championship for Dance, and made her debut with the International Ballet Company in 1942. Dame Sonia toured Japan in 1952, the first ballerina to do so since Pavlova.
In 1945, she joined the American Ballet Theatre, and began to appear as a guest performer throughout the world. Dame Sonia has danced with some of the greatest male dancers in the world, among them Rudolph Nureyev, with whom she danced in his American debuts in New York and Chicago.
Choreographer Thor Sutowski will present more than 50 Ballet South dancers, as well as 20 of Fauquier’s most talented children, in the production. Mr. Sutowski has worked with the San Diego Ballet, the San Francisco Ballet, the National Ballet in Washington, D.C., the American Ballet Theatre and the Norwegian National Ballet.
He has received three Emmy Awards for PBS Television productions, is chairman of the Dance Department of the Alabama School of Fine Arts and serves as choreographer for the
