There are many factors which influence the risk of radon exposure. Smoking, Dr. Einarson said, increases the risk tenfold. People who spend much of their time inside are at greater risk than those who work outside. Prior health and the family’s medical history are also factors which vary from individual to individual.
The danger from radon exposure, Dr. Einarson stressed, is over many months and years. Homeowners should not rush out and have expensive repairs or renovations done to their homes until they are certain that there is a problem.
