Robert Anderson was appointed Tuesday to the county’s Board of Supervisors to represent StonewailHawthom District.
The 57-year-old retired Eastern Airlines pilot has been a member of the county’s Planning Commission, representing Stonewall-Hawthorn District, since 1986.
The 3-1 vote by the county’s supervisors followed an impassioned plea in favor of Robert Darby of Woodville by Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham. His nomination failed for lack of a second.
Col. Bingham told his fellow board members that although “both individuals are imminently qualified," in his opinion Mr. Darby’s business experience gave him the edge.
He cited the problems facing the county, the landfill, schools, and suggested that Mr. Darby, who Col. Bingham said had taken a company "from zero to $176 million in 12 years," has the business expertise which could help the county. "Running this county is more and more like a business," he said. And, he suggested, Mr. Darby has contacts around the state whose expertise might be tapped to help the county.
Col. Bingham said he had heard the suggestion that if Mr. Anderson won the board seat, Mr. Darby could be appointed to the resulting vacancy on the Planning Commission. “Why disrupt both boards?” he asked.
He called Mr. Anderson, along with Mike Massie, the board's representative, “two of the levelest heads" on the commission. “I get the impression,” he added, "that others (on the commission) are taking care of their own self-interest.”
