For each act,

a consequence

To thp editor: *■ I Vmidd like to share some in* sights that came to me last Tuesday morning as I witnessed a violent event.

I had awakened early to feed my cats and go for a run, when the frantic yapping sound of dogs on the hunt could be heard. My first reaction was one of mild irritation.

Then while I was washing my face, I heard an animal crying out in distress, “M-A-A-A-A, M-A-A-A-”. It was a desperation cry,.very loud, even through windows and doors closed against the chilly wetness. The bleating tones made me think that perhaps a calf was being attacked. I slammed my contact lenses into my eyes and ran to the door.

As I opened it, I saw a movement in the woods on the hill beside our house. Two large dogs ran away over the hill.

They left the deer. She was in agony. Larger than a fawn, but not yet a full-grown doe, she stood with her rump and belly ripped off, struggling to walk. The muscles of her front right leg had been severed.

Shocked, I tried to make sense of the whole scene — the beauty of the quiet rain, sound of the rushing river, fragrance of pine, and this exquisite animal standing in her own blood on the pine needles.

I stood helplessly, crying and watching.
