Another leap up from last year for the Panthers will be pitching. Junior Amy Nokes was the only one on the mound for RCHS in 1988. This year she will have support from junior Karen Payne and sophomore Dana Finchum.
A key returnee is last year’s team MVP, Donna Foster. “The poor girl works herself to death behind the plate,” Leake said of her senior catcher. Because Nokes and Foster played together last year, Leake says the combination should click this season.
When she’s not pitching, Karen Payne will be at second base; backing her up will be freshman Angela Pullen and sophomore Jennifer Wines. Wines will also be called upon for her speed to pinch-run for the pitchers when they get on base and she’ll also see considerable time as the designated hitter. At shortstop will be Dawn Johnson, a transfer from Fauquier. “Dawn has the strongest arm I’ve ever seen,” said Leake, who played softball for Bridgewater College in Harrisonburg.
In the outfield, junior Beth Conover will start at left for RCHS, and sophomore Deena Hitt will be at center. Right field is still up for grabs with freshman Tasha Roy and senior Nicole Mayer vying for the starting nod.
