Panthers’ future third baseman. Freshmen James Roy and Chris Sutton "are both working hard to sharpen fundamentals. Both have a lot of enthusiasm and the potential to develop into major contributors jn the years to come,” Leake added.
The Panthers are predicted to finish in the middle of the district, with Stonewall Jackson, Strasburg, Clarke and Page picked as early favorites. Leake sees this as a blessing because it will take some of the pressure off. “Instead of trying to stay number one, we will be trying to become number one. It will have a positive influence on our work habits.”
A major obstacle to success for the Rappahannock baseball team is the lack of a feeder system, or junior varsity squad. “We are the only team in the district without one. We have five sophomores and two freshmen on the squad; if they could play jayvee, they would develop more. Summer leagues help, but not enough. However, we do have a consistent blend of talent and should do well this year and in the years to come,” Leake concluded.
Rappahannock’s next game is April 4 at Page County and the home opener is April 7 against George Mason. Games start at 5:00 p.m.
