Rappahannock’s girls’ softball ^team is ranked at the bottom in all the Bull Run District’s pre-season polls this year, but don’t expect any gpmplaints from Coach Rene Leake, 'the second-year coach relishes the thought of entering the season as a fyank underdog and predicts a surprise or two in the upcoming weeks. .,j The Lady Panthers were 1-6 last year in Rappahannock’s premier girls’ softball season, but Coach Leake is quick to add that four of the losses were decided by two runs or Iqss. Eight girls return from last year’s squad; seven of them lettered.
Leake feels that experience will )>e a help. However, the team as a whole is still very young. Of the 17 players fielded by RCHS, six are ifreshmen and five are sophomores.
The Panthers’ strengths are enthusiasm and defense, especially in the infield. ‘There will be few errors, if any, committed this year by the infield. We are really solid,” said Ms. Leake. The only setback could l*e starting freshmen Sherron Boddie at first base and Jody Botkin at .third. “The only reason this is a .weakness is because of the lack of playing experience. Both girls have great attitudes and work hard,” Leake explained.
