RICHMOND — An assortment of apples and apple products collected by the Bureau of Food Inspec-tfon in the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) during the last several days has generally tested free of Alar.
Out of 113 samples tested to date, Alar was detected in only nine, dt levels ranging from 1.0 to 2.8 parts per million (ppm). The level determined safe by the EPA is 20 ppm.
Samples were collected and analyzed by the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services as follows:
Retail market samples: 45 samples of fresh apples (nine had very low levels of Alar as cited above); 42 samples of processed apples.
USDA donated foods program for school breakfasts/lunches: eight samples of fresh and processed apples.
Controlled atmosphere storage warehouses: 18 samples analyzed to date.
