The well has collected more than a quarter-million dollars over the past 35 years, according to H.T.N. Graves, president of Luray Caverns Inc. “We are delighted to provide this means for the collection of funds which are used in their entirety to fight disease, human suffering and to foster projects for the needy,” he said. The caverns staff has devised an ingenious method to clean the coins using a sand filled portable cement mixer and a gas-fired burner to dry the thousands of coins after they are fished from the limestone-rich water.
