The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service offers a number of hints for cleaning brick or stone fireplaces which have become discolored with smoke, grease and grime after use.
There are a number of commercial fireplace cleaners designed to remove the particles left after fires are burned. Be sure, the Extension Service notes, to follow the manufacturer’s directions. When cleaning vertical surfaces, clean from the bottom up. If the area to be cleaned is lhrge, do it in small sections.
Never allow the cleaning solution 'to remain on tile or chrome surfaces; 'the cleaning agent may stain permanently or remove the finish. Don’t allow the cleaner to come into contact with painted surfaces, rugs or finished wood, as it may stain or strip ‘the finish.
If you prefer not to use caustic Cleaners, the Extension Service suggests a dish or other household detergent mixed with water. The thick Suds should be applied liberally and Scrubbed with a stiff brush. Heavily Soiled areas may require a second 'cleaning. Rinse and let dry.
