County man
dies in wreck
Michael H. Dunn II, 19, of Route 1, Washington, died early Saturday morning when the pickup truck he was driving ran off Route 522 in Culpeper County and hit a tree.
According to Trooper W.O. Miller, who investigated the accident, Mr. Dunn was northbound just past the Devil’s Run bridge when his 1989 Nissan pickup failed to negotiate Durant’s Curve, a sharp right-hand bend about 1/2 mile from the Hazel River bridge.
Trooper Miller said that, based on evidence at the scene, the truck ran off the left side of the highway and traveled 42 feet before the brakes were applied.
After sliding about another 100 feet, the truck glanced off a small tree and veered off at an angle into Charles Brooks' driveway. The truck ran approximately 130 feet down the driveway, Trooper Miller said, before slamming head on into a tree in the center of the driveway’s turnaround area.
Mr. Dunn apparently was killed by the impact, Trooper Miller said, but was transported to Culpeper Memorial Hospital by rescue personnel from the Salem Volunteer Fire Department, where he was pronounced dead
Trooper Miller said that Mr. Dunn was not wearing his seat belt.
The trooper said that his investigation into the accident is continuing. He said that at this time, “momentary inattention" of the driver appears to be the cause of the accident. He said that excessive speed did not appear to be a factor.
Trooper Miller said that a final determination of whether alcohol was involved will not be made until the results of an autopsy are complete, but “there was no evidence of alcohol at the scene.”
