The other districts in the county also exceeded their goals. Edna Met-y zinger, captain in the Piedmont Dis-« trict, reported a total of $644. 1 Volunteers in the Piedmont District I were Celine Siira, Dorothy Butler, Janet Reed, Nancy Freeman, Polly Aylor, Janie Jackson, Helen Brown, Miriam Reeve, Jon Heddleston and Charlotte Aylor Johnson.
Lillian Aylor, captain of Hampton District, reported that $610 was donated. Her helpers were William H. "Bill” Lyne, Marie Davis, Margaret Summers, Margaret Tucker, Doris Donald and Toni Massie.
In addition, mail contributions totaled $225. “This successful campaign is not only a tribute to the dedicated district captains and the volunteers, but also to the local people who gave so generously. The American Heart Association sends its thanks,” Mr. Siira said.
A spokesman for the American Heart Association reminded that over 600,000 Americans died in World Wars I and II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. “That’s a terrible tragic waste of human lives. But this year another enemy is going to claim more American lives than all these wars combined. In 1989 it will claim the lives of nearly one million American men, women and children, a life every 32 seconds. The enemy is cardiovascular diseases.”
