Contest
seeks poets
The best 152 poets will win more than $11,000 worth of prizes in the American Poetry Association’s new contest. The contest is open to the public and there is no entry fee.
The Grand Prize is $1,000 and the First Prize is $500. Other prizes include cash and book awards. All 152 winners will be published.
“Originality, sincerity, and feeling are what the judges look for,” said Robert Nelson, publisher for the association. “Many unknown poets have those talents in abundance. We want to encourage those poets to keep on writing.”
Poets may send up to six poems, no more than 20 lines each, with name and address on each page, to American Poetry Association, Dept. CT-33, 250 A Potrero St., P.O. Box 1803, Santa Cruz, CA 95061-1803. Entries should be mailed by June 30.
Each poem is also considered for publication in the American Poetry Anthology, a leading collection of today’s poems. Accepted poets may be asked to buy a copy to insure inclusion. All poets are eligible to win prizes. There is no obligation to buy a book to win.
Every poet who enters the contest receives a free copy of the “Poet’s Guide to Getting Published,” a four-page booklet full of helpful advice and information.
During seven years of sponsorship, the American Poetry Association has run 30 contests and awarded $120,000 in prizes to 2,900 poets.
