He said that he had done some checking on Mr. Darby’s background, and had found, "nothing but praise for him.” v

Col. Bingham added that Mr. Darby’s 191 signatures" on his petitions represent “the will of the people” in the district. "Gentlemen, we cannot ignore that.” He said that the appointment will influence the special election scheduled for November, and that Mr. Darby’s appointment would give him an opportunity “to prove himself" before the election. He added that, whoever finally won the board appointment, both candidates should face the district’s voters in November.

In placing Mr. Darby’s name into nomination. Col. Bingham praised Mr. Anderson’s record of service to the county. “In my opinion, however, I cannot discount the tremendous track record of Bob Darby in finance."

And, he added, “I think that this county desperately needs new blood in positions of authority — on the Planning Commission and on the Board of Supervisors.”

Mike Massie, Hampton District’s representative, agreed that choosing a supervisor to represent another district “is not an easy job.” The residents of the district should have the final say, he said, “and they will do that in the fall. We are picking someone to represent them until then.”

Both candidates are very qualified, Mr. Massie said, “but one is more so.” He nominated Mr. Anderson, citing his record of service to the county. However, he emphasized that his nomiation “is a vote for Bob Anderson —not against Bob Darby.

How can the board. Col. Bingham replied, ignore all the people who signed Mr. Darby’s petition?

“Some people signed both . . . this is not an election,” Mr. Massie said.

Charles K. “Pete” Estes, Piedmont District’s representative, said “I have gotten a lot of phone calls, and I have not heard one negative comment from the people of Stonewall-Hawthom District.”
