The Virginia Department of Transportation has established a program called Adopt-a-Highway, which encourages volunteers to help VDOT clean Virginia’s state highways of unsightly, unsafe and expensive litter. You may have seen the blue signs along the highway recognizing the volunteers for their work.
The program began last September, and already more than 700 miles have been adopted by concerned individuals and approximately 260 varied groups across the state. Every week, nearly a dozen new adoptions are accepted by VDOT. Those volunteers already are making a difference in the way our highways look.
In the year before the program started, VDOT spent more than $4.3 million and 430,000 hours picking up litter from the highways. The new
