'Crossing Delancey' at theater
The movie Crossing Delancey will be playing at the Gay Street Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, April 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. The movie stars Amy Irving and Sylvia Miles. Director Joan Micklin Silver, who made Hester Street, has gone back to the old neighborhood a hundred years later. The heroine is Isabelle Grossman, called Izzy (Irving), a nice girl who works in an uptown bookstore and dreams of cultural glory (in Anton, a best-selling phony). Izzy’s grandmother, Bubbie (Yiddish-theater legend Reizl Bozyk) lives downtown near Delancey Street, a world that Izzy thinks she doesn’t belong to anymore. But Bubbie hires a matchmaker (Miles) to find Izzy a nice Jewish boy — Sam, the pickle man, who Izzy rejects. The switch is that Sam turns out to have more poetry in his pickles than Anton has in his pretentious, Confucius-quoting soul. The movie is rated PG. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
Race tickets at Snaps
Advance ticket sales for the Great Meadows Steeplechase race which will be held Saturday, May 6 will be available at Snaps in Flint Hill. There will be advance ticket sales only. Hours are Monday and Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 12:30 to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m. to noon. For further information call 675-3838.
Sue Slaughter area meeting
The spring meeting of the Sue Slaughter area group will be held on Thursday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church in Sperryville. There will be a slide presentation by Mr. and Mrs: Howard Holschuh on their recent trip to Kenya and a report by Mrs. L. Starke Jones on her work in Bermuda during WMU Focus Week in February.
The Sue Slaughter area consists of women of the Amissville, Chester Gap, Forest Grove, Mount Lebanon, Reynolds Memorial, Washington and Woodville Baptist Churches. Pastors, members of these and other churches and friends are invited to attend.
Daytime CPR course
The Rappahannock County Extension Office, in cooperation with the Rappahannock-Rapidan Emergency Medical Services Council, is sponsoring a CPR course on Monday and Tuesday, April 10 and 11. It will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Washington fire hall. The cost is $6, which covers the cost of materials. Spaghetti dinner
The Amissville Volunteer Fire Department will be sponsoring a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, April 1 at the fire hall, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door only.
