On-line sales good
Hillsdale Grocery reported that ticket sales^rom its on-line lottery terminal have been good during the first several days of the new game, which began Monday, May 22. Though the store, which opens at 4:30 a.m., has missed a lot of morning business because the terminal doesn't come up until 6 a.m., Jeanie Welch reported that business in the evenings is "booming." Hillsdale was selected by lottery officials from among the county's 12 retailers to receive Rappahannock's first on-line terminal, which allows players to select their own three-digit number for the nightly drawing, broadcast on Virginia public television at 7 p.m. Sales state-wide, according to lottery officials, were much better than expected on the first day, totalling $685,230. That was far better than the 250,000 which lottery director Kenneth Thorson had set as a first-day goal. "This is good times almost three*" said Paula Otto, the lottery's public inforfination director. The total payoff on the first day's number, 914, was $305,630.
Electronic switching in town
Washington's residents, and others in the county's 675 telephone exchange, will have a digital switching system put into operation this weekend. According to a Centel spokesman, the changeover will be made at midnight Saturday, May 27. One immediate change for all customers with ft^iat exchange is that they will no longer be able to dial just the last four numbers to reach other telephones within the .exchange. The new equipment requires that the 675 bedialed for all calls. Residential customers will also be offered several extra features, including Call Waiting, for a 30-day free trial after the electronic equipment is installed.
