the Rappahannock-Rapidan EMS Council, which oversees emergency medical services in Rappahannock, Culpeper, Madison, Fauquier and Orange counties, Mr. Johnson said that he sees squads across the area which are in “desperate need of additional personnel.” They are needed, not only for patient care in the field, but also for administrative duties, fund raising and driving the rescue vehicles.
“Due to the area’s ever-expanding population, which creates an increasing demand for services, the local rescue squads are becoming unable to handle the demands of their communities because of the lack of personnel available during day and night time hours. “This requires the same few squad members to respond on every call, and even delays response times up to 30 minutes. “We need your help,” Mr. Johnson said, directing his plea to the members of the community at large. “We need that help, not just in monetary donations, but in donating some of your time during the month.”
Training for medical personnel, drivers and administrative duties is available at no charge through the EMS office, Mr. Johnson added. “You provide the interest, we’ll provide the training."
For residents who think they can help , and are at least 16 years of age, Mr. Johnson suggested contacting their local rescue squad, or calling the Rappahannock-Rapidan Emergency Medical Services Council office in Culpeper (825-6849) for a local contact person or more information about how each resident can help.
