how to say “no” to inappropriate touches from family members, neighbors, strangers, and others.’ I’m not trying to offend anyone, but I think it should read ‘family members, teachers, and others.’ ... In second grade it says ‘Students will recognize that everyone has strengths and weaknesses. All persons need to be accepted as worthwhile . . . There are a lot of people out there who are not acceptable . . . You can consider the morals of a person before you say they can be accepted.”
Skip Arnold said his work in the Sheriffs Department in Fairfax caused him to see “all the garbage in the world. One mother told her 11 year-old daughter to come into the bedroom so her boyfriend could have sex with her twice.” One man was the father and grandfather of a girl and at the age of 12 “he got her pregnant. Fairfax County is one of the most affluent in the country. Kids from good backgrounds, with fathers who are generals and corporation lawyers are in trouble ... on drugs . . . We’ve got to realize that we must tell our kids everything . . . There are a few things I feel should be changed ... I think it’s a good program . . . My fourth grader came home and asked, ‘Dad, what’s a diaphram?’ I asked why he wanted to know and he said because on the bus a seventh grader was calling the third graders diaphrams.”
Not age appropriate
Ron Frazier of Amissville said he had a daughter who would start kindergarten next year. “When I read what she will be seeing next year I was surprised my four-year old would be subjected to that . . . You’re going to have the childrendoing more than we do during their waking hours . . . The material for fourth and fifth graders is not ageappropriate . . . What sex ed wre got was the biology type. Most of our contemporaries did pretty well writh that ... K-12 blows my* mind ... is there any way Rappahannock County could be the first school system to petition the state administration not to subject our children to this. There is some terrible language in here.
Reading from the proposed curriculum, Mr. Frazier continued, “The twelfth objective for kindergarten says:
‘Students will use correct terminology when talking about body parts and functions. Descriptive Statement: Terms included in this objective are urinate, bowel movement, penis, and vulva to substitute for colloguial or slang terminology. There terms are introduced
